दशलक्षण (or Das Laskshan, means 10 virtues). It is kind of a 10-day mind-debugging festival observed by Jains across the world.
Each day a Virtue is observed.
- Day 1- Uttam Kshama (Supreme Forgiveness)
- Day 2- Uttam Mardav
- Day 3 - Uttam Arjava
- Day 4 - Uttam Shaucha
- Day 5 - Uttam Satya
- Day 6 - Uttam Sanyam
- Day 7 - Uttam Tap
- Day 8 - Uttam Tyag
- Day 9 - Uttam Akinchan
- Day 10 - Uttam Bhramcharya
How is it different from Paryushan Parv?
- Shwetambar jain observe Paryushan, Digamber jain observe Daslakshan. The festival looks mostly similar. In terms of calendar days, Paryushan comes first, followed by Daslakshan.
Why just 1 virtue a day, why not practice everything everyday?
- It helps Focus
Dietary Restrictions?
- The main goal is to reduce violence and harm to small insects and micro-organisms.
- Each family/individual decides what they want to skip (based on their self-control, family rituals etc). Universally onion, garlic, potato(ginger, arbi), are strict no. Then carrot, cauliflower, cabbage. Then spinach, (leavy veggies).
If we look at this zooming out, this is so fascinating! A person 100s of years ago, thought about microrganisms! I have huge respect for thinkers before our time who had patience and time to think through this and feel happy that this knowledge is still accessible!
